Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

January is in full swing, which means it’s time to fine tune your New Year’s resolutions to ensure that they stick throughout all of 2018. And if you haven’t made any resolutions yet, don’t be discouraged. It doesn’t need to be the start of the New Year to make a new goal. Here are some tips to help you along the way.

Make Them Measurable and Achievable

Any time you are setting a goal, it’s of the utmost importance that it be measurable. It’s easy to see the temptation to make vague goals. Many people think that they will be easier to achieve than specific goals, helping to create a sense of accomplishment that can build momentum and motivation. However, what generally tends to happen with vague goals is that the goalposts get brought down lower and lower over time, until the goal is neglected completely.

Fortunately, making measurable goals is easier than it sounds. For example, if your resolution was to get in shape, you can tighten it up to something specific that relates to fitness, such as going to yoga class once a month for the whole year.

The counterpart to having a measurable goal is having one that is also achievable. So if the resolution you made on December 31 wasn’t measurable or was too ambitious, now is the perfect time to realign it.

Keep Things Process-oriented

Instead of focusing your resolution based on the end goal you hope to achieve, base it off of the steps you will take to get there. That way, you will be able to achieve your goal over time, even if it takes longer than a year. Plus, you will be less likely to get discouraged and give up.

For example, instead of making a resolution to read 20 books in 2018, make a resolution to read at least a little bit of your book every day. You will be able to find the right reading pace that keeps you motivated but not overwhelmed, and you will build a strong habit, which is the key for reaching any goal. And speaking of reading, we have a very popular book group here at Southgate at Shrewsbury, which doubles as a great place for members of our independent living community to make new friends.
