Over the past several years, nutritionists have encouraged consumers to purchase foods free of dyes, harmful chemicals and growth hormones. Organic foods, those grown locally without the majority of these ingredients, generally provide people with healthier options, as they are chock-full of natural nutrients and home-grown goodness.
While few can deny the overarching health benefits of organic foods, a recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that these dietary options have been linked to reduced levels of pesticides and higher antioxidant levels – both of which can significantly increase seniors’ health.
Study finds organic foods healthier
The research, conducted by scientists from Washington State University, examined how organic foods affected individuals in 343 medical trials. They discovered that organic foods not only had higher levels of antioxidants – which have been linked to greater heart and mind health – but lower levels of both insecticides and cadmium, a toxic metal, than conventional foods. Charles Benbrook, a professor at the university’s Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources, emphasized that while people should be integrating more organic foods in their diets, adding more fruits and vegetables in general is key for health.
“The first and foremost message is people need to eat more fruits and vegetables,” Benbrook told the Los Angeles Times. “Buying organic is the surest way of limiting exposure if you have health issues, but by all means, people need to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables whether it’s organic or conventional.”
Organic turkey kebabs

- 1 lb. ground turkey meat
- 8 oz. organic mushrooms, sliced
- 1 box organic cherry tomatoes, rinsed
- 2 large organic red peppers, cut into squares
- 2 large organic green peppers, cut into squares
- 2 large organic onions, cut into squares
- 8 kebab skewers
Roll the ground turkey meat into 24 small balls. Prepare your kebabs by placing one turkey ball at the end of the skewer, followed by one piece each of red pepper, green pepper, onion, mushroom and tomato. Place another turkey ball on the skewer and repeat the process, ending with a third turkey ball. Once all eight kebab skewers are prepared, place them on the grill and allow them to cook until meat is done, or about five minutes on each side.
